A friend says,
I see there is a post going around again with some general automotive statements. I wanted to go over it with you as a retired certified mechanic. A little long but I want to save you some money.
1. Fuel at night or early morning: It is better to buy or fill up your car or motorcycle during early morning, when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks underground. . The colder the ground, the more dense the fuel. When it gets warmer, gas expands. So, buying in the afternoon or in the evening, your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature play an important role. 1 degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.
FALSE: The tanks are far enough under ground that temperature is not an issue If anything colder would be worse for reasons of condensation.
2. Fill fuel when half tank empty: Another most important tip is to fill up when your tank is HALF FULL. The reason for this is, the more fuel you have in your tank the less air is occupying its empty space. Gas evaporates faster than you can imagine.
TRUE: But not for the reason listed. Vehicles has devices that collect fuel vapors and return it to the tank. One reason to not let tank get low is to protect the fuel pump
3. Nozzle trigger should not be in the fast mode: While filling gas, the nozzle trigger should not be in the fast mode, instead it should be in the low stage to minimize the impacts of vapor and to have maximum economy of gas. If you see properly, you will find that the trigger has three stages-Low, Medium, and High.
False: If anything filling the tank faster and returning the gas cap would minimize vapor loss.
3. Don't fill petrol while tanker is unloading petrol: It is important to notice this as when the tankers fill fuel at the fuel station all the dirt that is settled at the bottom gets disturbed and if you are fueling at the same time it can get into your vehicle tank along with fuel - it can affect your engine.
FALSE: In fact it is just the opposite. Today's pumps have great filtering systems, dirt is not an issue. What is an issue is ethanol. As fuel sits in the tanks the ethanol settles at the bottom. Anything over 10% can harm an engine that is not a "Flex Fuel". You want that fuel well mixed.
4. Proper tire pressure: Tire pressure must be checked once every two weeks. It helps to reduce the drag while driving thus increasing your mileage. There is a label in your car just when you open the driver seat which tells you the tire pressure.
True: That label is not always there. Never exceed the tire pressure listed on the tire itself. And these are COLD pressures. At least two hours after driving.
5. Service vehicle regularly: During car service, always get three things replaced - oil, oil filter & air filter. If you can't find a reliable mechanic then you can do it at low cost.
Partially True: Oil changes are very important and always use the weight oil that is called for. You don't have to do the 3000 miles your mechanic tells you. Look at your owners manual and see what is recommended. A DIRTY AIR FILTER WILL NOT CAUSE POOR FUEL MILEAGE on a fuel injected engine. Again go by the recommendation in your owners manual.
6. Replace spark plugs: once every 5 years, you must replace the spark plugs, use a better quality spark plug not the ordinary one which comes with the stock car. It improves your fuel combustion thus giving more mileage and it improves your air condition performance.
FALSE: Replacing spark plugs with one other than original can cause engine or ignition system damage. Age of a spark plug does not determine when to change them, again consult your owners manual.
7. Clear out unwanted items from your car: It is important that you remove all the unwanted items whenever you are starting to move around. Every extra pound of weight will need additional fuel, decreasing the mileage.
True: Duh
