Some Medical Conditions Require A Doctor's Release To Get A Massage

Some Medical Condition Will Require A Doctor's Release To Get A Massage
Heart conditions of ANY kind are the number 1 condition that massage therapists will need a doctor's release.
Stroke is the number 2 condition that massage therapists will need a doctor's release.

There are a few medical conditions that will require a client to get a doctor's release in order for me to even allow me to get onto my massage table, conditions that put a client's life at risk.  So, if you have one of these conditions, please bring the release with you before you come in to get your massage.

First of all, I have to let you know that I'm NOT a doctor.  You will fill out a VERY extensive medical/health questionnaire when you come into your appointment.  I've had MANY clients tell me that they have NEVER filled out a health questionnaire in any other massage therapists office.  Second, some of them get mad at me when I tell them I need a doctor's release, some don't.  This is MY training from massage school.  NO, I am NOT trained to know every health condition that will require a release, but I do know the major things to look for when I'm looking over your file.  Third, if I don't know, I may have to research. And, last,  part of the reason for the fact that other massage therapists are not asking is because for one, Kansas is STILL one of ONLY four states that DO NOT REQUIRE someone to have a license to practice massage therapy.  I know, I've blogged about this one.

I'm only going to cover a few things that I have to watch for when a client comes in, which are the major ones.  Heart conditions are the number 1 thing I will need a release.  I recently had a client in who has lost his therapist that liked me, but he will NOT go get the release to come back because he fails to understand the why even though I've told him the why.  Here is the why behind it.  I'm pushing your blood around which can put stress on the hear, leading to a heart attack, and if in AFIB, maybe even a stroke.  Yes, I'm trained in CPR and first aid.  But, honestly, I don't want to have to put either into practice with anyone.  I've also had a client that got mad when she only had AFIB, but no recent symptoms.  Same answer, I'm still not willing to put your life on the line by massaging you.  Please bring in a release if you have heart condition.

The second most major condition is a stroke.  One of my clients, also a friend, which she was a friend first, had a stroke.  I told her a week before her massage that I need the release.  She tried to argue that the release she got from the hospital that says she has no restrictions would suffice.  I let her know that would not work more than once.  I'm fairly certain she was mad at me.  All I can tell you in her case is that I'd rather have her mad at me than to take the risk of breaking something lose during the massage and causing her to have another stroke.  The same goes for anyone that comes into my office whether I know you or not.

At the time I went through massage school, I was taught that cancer was a no because it was thought that massage could push the cancer into other areas of the body, but that has since been dis proven.  I also have to watch closely for blood pressure issues.  I've also had a client that knowing had MANY things wrong with her, including blood pressure, which she was NOT medicated, so I had to deny her service, making her mad.  Again, not worth your life to take the risk.  As long as it is controlled, there is NOT an issue to get a massage.

Last major thing I watch is diabetes, but not so much that I need a release as I need to how and when meds are taken.  If you are coming in as a diabetic, please make sure you are coming in the middle of the time that your meds are administered because massage can push the drug out of your system causing you to go into diabetic shock if you aren't in the middle of the administration.

If anyone should have any questions as to what I may need a medical release for something, please don't hesitate to call me.  Please leave me a message so I can call you back.  I'd rather you come in prepared that to have you walk away from the appointment until I have what I need in your file.

Book Your Appointment Online

A long time ago, I got a massage from a professional that answered her phone in the middle of the massage that I was paying to get. I determined that I would NEVER do that to my clients. That is one reason I have for people booking online rather than to call, email, or text me. I have been in 2 locations, especially in my current location, where I didn't have a signal on my phone to even get in touch with me, which was my second most important reason to have clients book online. Our last home also had a poor signal most of the time. And, my last reason for online booking, has to do with avoiding sales calls and other types of solicitation that I'm not looking to deal with ever. Feel free to book online anytime as I am extremely hard to reach. Thank you to all of my regular clients that come in and allow me to book for you to help you maintain your schedule.

MAYO-LESS PASTA SALAD

Please share so you can make someone else smile!  Thank you.

MAYO-LESS PASTA SALAD

INGREDIENTS
1 head garlic
1/2 Tbsp olive oil
1 lb. pasta shells
15 oz. ricotta cheese
1/4 cup grated Parmesan
to taste salt & pepper
1 pint cherry tomatoes
3 cups baby spinach
Directions
Using a sharp knife, cut approximately ½ inch off the top of the head of garlic. Place the garlic bulb in a small bowl or dish and drizzle ½ tablespoon of olive oil over the exposed cloves. Cover the bowl with an inverted plate. Microwave on high, in one minute increments, until the garlic is soft and fragrant (about 2 minutes). Use caution when touching the dishes, they will be very hot. Allow the garlic to cool.
Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil, add the pasta, and cook for 7-10 minutes or until al dente. Reserve ½ cup of the starchy pasta cooking water.
While the pasta is cooking, squeeze the garlic cloves from the head and mince well. Add the minced garlic to a medium bowl along with the ricotta cheese, a healthy dose of freshly cracked pepper, and about ½ tsp of salt. Add the ½ cup of hot, starchy pasta cooking water. Stir until it forms a smooth sauce.
Drain the pasta. Return the drained pasta to the warm pot (the burner should be turned off). Add the fresh baby spinach and pour the ricotta sauce over top. Slice the cherry tomatoes and add them to the pot as well. Stir until everything is well mixed. Add in the parmesan cheese and stir again. Taste and add salt and pepper to taste. Serve warm

Garlic Parmesan Cheese Bombs

Please share so you can make someone else smile!  Thank you.

Garlic Parmesan Cheese Bombs

1 can refrigerated biscuits (like the ones by Pillsbury - I used their Texas-style biscuits)
3 mozzarella cheese sticks, cut into 4 pieces each (so you have 12 total)
4 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 tablespoon parmesan cheese

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400 and grease a baking sheet. Separate each biscuit. Place one piece of cheese in the center of each biscuit, pinch the sides around the cheese so it is completely encased by the biscuit dough. Place seam-side down on prepared baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes until golden.
Melt butter. Stir in garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and parmesan cheese. When biscuits are done baking, brush butter mixture over each biscuit. Serve warm.

Oven Smoked Brisket

Please share so you can make someone else smile!  Thank you.

Oven Smoked Brisket Yum!

Ingredients:
7-11 lb. brisket, untrimmed
1-2 bottles liquid smoke
1 tablespoon salt
4-6 tablespoons McCormick Montreal Grill Mate Steak Seasoning
Directions:
Trim brisket of excessive fat, but leave a nice layer for a wonderful flavor. Place brisket in a large roasting pan or in a ex large Ziploc bag. Pour liquid smoke over brisket and seal tightly. Place in the refrigerator for 6-8 hours or overnight.
Remove brisket from the refrigerator and let set for 1 hour. Preheat oven to 275 degrees F. Season brisket with salt and sprinkle Grill Mate Steak Seasoning on top of the fat side covering all the way to the edges. Place brisket fat side up on a rack inside of a roaster pan and cover with foil. Bake in the oven for 3 1/2 to 8 hours depending on the size. Remove from oven and transfer to a cutting board and let rest for 15-20 minutes before slicing. Serve with barbecue sauce.
I put this in the crockpot for 8-10 hours. We did NOT need bbq sauce!
Note: Cook brisket 30-45 minutes times per the pound of the brisket. 7 lb. brisket will cook for 3 1/2 hours to 5 1/2 hours. At the end of the resting time, you can slice the brisket and put it back in a baking dish and pour barbecue sauce over it and bake an additional 30-40 minutes.

The Texas Squealer Burger

Please share so you can make someone else smile!  Thank you.

The Texas Squealer Burger

This is my version of a Texas classic. This burger is moist, flavorful and stays together well when grilling!
INGREDIENTS
SERVINGS 6-8
1 1⁄2lbs 80% lean ground beef
12slices bacon, uncooked
1 -1 1⁄2tablespoon grill seasoning (I use McCormicks Mesquite)
1teaspoon garlic powder
1tablespoon minced dried onion
1⁄4cup Worcestershire sauce
salt and pepper
DIRECTIONS
Begin by chopping the raw bacon finely with a sharp knife. I slice it in half, then in strips, then dice it. The key is to make it small. I do not recommend a food processor because it heats the bacon up too much and can become gummy.
Gently mix all ingredients in a large bowl and add the bacon. Form into 6-8 patties and put in the freezer for 30 minutes before grilling. This is not a necessary step, but I think the meat holds together nicely when the patties go on cold.
Grill patties approximately 5 minutes on each side. Allow them to rest 5 minutes before serving.
Top with cheese if you wish and any of your favorite toppings.
